Choosing the right rug
A rug makes a room warmer and quieter, and sets how big a space feels. The most common mistake is a rug that's too small.
The size
In the living room, a rug works best when at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs stand on it. That ties everything together. Under a dining table, the chairs should still be on the rug when pulled back: measure the table and add a good half metre all round.
The material
Wool is hard-wearing, feels warm and naturally resists dirt. Cotton is cheaper and often washable, but wears faster. Synthetic rugs are easy to clean but feel less full. Jute and sisal look nicely natural but feel rougher underfoot.
Care
A non-slip underlay stops sliding and protects your floor. Turn the rug now and then so it wears and fades evenly where the sun falls on it.
